Frequently asked questions

  • Is pet insurance worth it for my older cat?

Pet insurance isn’t compulsory, but choosing to take out cover for your older cat could help protect you from vet bills that result from accidents or unexpected illness.

Towards their twilight years, cats can lose some of their street smarts (though try telling them that) and be prone to infections and chronic illnesses.

  • Does it cost more to insure an older cat?

As your cat gets older, they’re more likely to need vet treatment. So you’ll often find the cost of your cat’s policy gets more expensive each year. This can also vary depending on where you live, any pre-existing conditions they have, and their breed.

  • Can I get farewell cover for my older cat?

You can choose farewell cover as an optional add on to your policy. This includes death from accidental injury or illness and cremation or burial.

Saying goodbye to your cat is never easy, so adding farewell cover means you don’t have to fret about the cost.

  • Do you offer bereavement support for pet loss?

If you’re ever faced with the difficult loss of your older cat, know that you are not alone. We’ve partnered with Blue Cross to give you bereavement support when you need it most.

You have access to a dedicated support number and can speak with trained volunteers 365 days a year, from 8.30am to 8.30pm. Find the Petsure support number in your MyPetsure account or via our claims team.

  • Is dental cover included in my older cat insurance?

Our standard lifetime cat insurance includes treatment for dental accidents up to your chosen vet fee limit. You can then extend your cover to include dental illness, up to a maximum of £5,000 or your vet fee limit (whichever is lower).

Some other providers don’t cover dental illness or won’t offer a policy for older cats when they reach a certain age, but this depends on the individual provider and the policy type you choose.

*Cover for pre-existing medical conditions is subject to acceptance. They will not be covered unless you have declared them and they are shown on your Confirmation of Cover.

**Illnesses and symptoms won’t be covered in the first 14 days and accidents won’t be covered in the first 2 days of the policy. This is unless you are switching from another lifetime pet insurance product with no break in cover and the claim you want to make would have been covered by your previous policy. Other exclusions may apply to other sections.
