What is a pre-existing condition?

At Petsure, we see a pre-existing condition as:

  • Anything your pet has had in the last two years before your cover start date or waiting period.
  • A condition diagnosed over two years ago needing ongoing treatment, check-ups, or monitoring.

When we say ‘anything’, this could be:

  • Signs or symptoms of health/behaviour changes
  • Existing illnesses, injuries, or deformities
  • Needing or had treatment, surgery, medication, or a prescribed diet
  • Check-ups, investigations, monitoring, or vet advice

Other insurers might have different definitions of an existing condition.

What Causes What Causes
Can I get pet insurance for pre-existing conditions?

Petsure is one of only a few insurers that can offer pre-existing conditions cover for pets. Cover for pre-existing medical conditions is subject to acceptance. They won’t be covered unless you have declared them and they are shown on your Confirmation of Cover.

Some other providers do not cover pre-existing conditions whatsoever. Others have limited or lower-level cover and compulsory excesses.

What Causes What Causes
What type of pet insurance for pre-existing conditions do you offer?

The most comprehensive type of policy – lifetime pet insurance with up to £15,000 vet fee cover. You’ll be able to use your full vet fee limit towards claims on most of the pre-existing conditions you’ve declared and we’ve agreed to cover.

Some conditions, treatments, and investigations have a maximum amount which can be paid out on a claim. Don’t forget to read about these in your policy wording.

Is it worth getting pet insurance for pre-existing conditions?

When your pet is living with a health condition, the last thing you want to worry about is affording treatment if things get worse.

Having a comprehensive pet insurance policy can help reassure you that your pet has more care options if their symptoms worsen.

Our expert says…

“Although you may have planned out how to manage existing costs for your pet’s condition, you never know when things may take a turn.

That’s why it helps to know that you have insurance which can cover you if your pet’s health worsens. So you can focus on taking care of them, not stressing about how to pay a costly vet bill.”

Allie Simpson – Pet insurance specialist and dog mum

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to declare my pet’s pre-existing conditions?

When getting a quote, you’ll need to let us know about any symptoms or conditions your pet has developed within the last two years.

Not declaring your pet’s conditions could mean your cover may be invalidated if you needed to make a claim.

So if you’re ever unsure whether your pet has a pre-existing condition, ask your vet to check their health record.

  • How do pet insurance companies find out about pre-existing conditions?

As part of our claims process, we get in touch directly with your vet for more information about your pet’s health.

Your vet will let us know about any symptoms or conditions that show on your pet’s medical history. If these are recorded before your policy start date and within the last two years, they’re classed as a pre-exiting condition.

  • Can I change pet insurance with a pre-existing condition?

While you can switch your pet insurance over to another provider, they may not cover your pet’s pre-existing conditions.

Research carefully and check the policy wording for each insurer to see if there’s any restrictions if they do offer pre-existing conditions cover.

  • Will my pet’s pre-existing conditions be covered straight away?

If you’re switching across from another lifetime pet insurer, your pet could be covered immediately. To be eligible for continuous cover, you need to:

    • Declare your conditions and have these accepted by us, which will show on your Confirmation of Cover – please note that only new and worsening symptoms of a pre-existing condition will be covered
    • Switch from another lifetime pet insurance product
    • Have the same benefits you had on your previous policy, e.g. missing pet cover

If you’re not switching with continuous cover, you can claim for new illnesses and symptoms after 14 days and for accidents after 2 days once your policy starts.

  • How much does pet cover for pre-existing conditions cost?

How much you’ll pay for your pet’s pre-existing conditions cover varies depending on different things, including:

    • What conditions your pet has and how severe they are
    • Your pet’s breed and age
    • Where you live
    • Your chosen vet fee limit, excess, bill share, and optional extras
  • Do you offer pet insurance for older cats and dogs with pre-existing conditions?

Yes, we do! You could get pet insurance if you’ve got an older cat or dog with an existing illness or injury.

Lots of insurers may make you pay mandatory contributions (known as co-payments) on top of your excess when your pet gets to a certain age – but not us.

You get to choose how much you want to pay for your excess and voluntary bill share when you set up your pet insurance.

  • Are allergies considered a pre-existing condition for pet insurance?

Yes, allergies would be seen as a pre-existing condition if your pet has shown symptoms or been diagnosed within the last 24 months.

They may be having ongoing tests, medication or treatment to deal with their allergies.

  • Does pet insurance cover euthanasia?

We hope your pet will live a long and healthy life but understand that you may want some peace of mind should the worst happen.

You can choose to add Farewell cover as an optional extra to your Petsure policy. This covers you if your pet dies or must be put to sleep by a vet due to accidental injury or illness.

You’ll get up to £250 towards the cost of:

    • Cremation or burial or having your pet’s body taken care of by the vet
    • An urn, casket, or box

**Illnesses and symptoms won’t be covered in the first 14 days and accidents won’t be covered in the first 2 days of the policy. This is unless you are switching from another lifetime pet insurance product with no break in cover and the claim you want to make would have been covered by your previous policy. Other exclusions may apply to other sections.
